Family Days Out - Museums in East Sussex

The Bluebell Railway - Steam Railway in Sussex

The Bluebell Railway, Sheffield Park Station East Sussex. TN22 3QL

The volunteer run Bluebell Line was the UK's first preserved standard gauge passenger railway, re-opening part of the Lewes to East Grinstead line of the old London Brighton and South Coast Railway in 1960. Since then it has developed into one of the largest tourist attractions in Sussex, yet it still remains true to its objectives of the preservation for posterity of a country branch line, its steam locomotives, coaches and goods stock, signalling systems, stations and operating practices.

Disabled Access at the Bluebell Railway

At our stations Level access is available from each of the station drives. Our stations have bridges or subways connecting the platforms, but those with walking difficulties or wheelchairs can be escorted by our station staff via a ramped crossing between the platforms. On occasions, at Sheffield Park, such access may be blocked by the position of a steam locomotive on the end of its train, and patience may be required. It is therefore advisable to ask our staff to help you cross well before the train is due.

Guide Dogs are most welcome on the Bluebell. Train destinations are indicated both visibly (with traditional "finger boards") and through audible announcements. Our station staff will be pleased to give visitors any help or assistance which they may require. The Bluebell Railway is a great family day out in Sussex.

Bodiham Castle - Great Family Days Out

Bodiam, nr Robertsbridge. East Sussex TN32 5UA

Bodiham Castle, Bodiham East Sussex. A great family day out in Sussex.

Bodiam Castle was constructed between 1385 and 1388 by Sir Edward Dalynrigge a Royal councillor and veteran of the wars with France. He received permission from King Richard II to build a castle on his manor at Bodiam. The castle he created although now mostly a ruin, is still one of the most celebrated in England.

Bodiham Castle is of a basic rectangular design with great drum towers at each corner but due to its magnificent setting and the peaceful reflections created in the waters of the moat, it has a romanticised appeal that has led to its reproduction on everything from book covers to jigsaw puzzles.

Despite the expansive moat, a long wooden access bridge and apparently impressive fortifications, the castle was incapable of being defended against heavy canon fire as the walls were too thin. It was in 1483 that it fell to a siege by Richard III, although it is commonly believed that no siege took place and the then owner Sir Thomas Lewknor probably surrendered without a fight.

In 1644 during the English Civil War the Parliamentarians were ordered to dismantle the castle and it remained a ruin until partially restored by Cubitt in the late 19th century and finally purchased and restored to its present condition by Lord Curzon in 1917, the castle passed to the National Trust on his death in 1925.

One of the most famous and evocative castles in Britain, Bodiam was built in 1385, as both a defence and a comfortable home. The exterior is virtually complete and the ramparts rise dramatically above the moat. Enough of the interior survives to give an impression of castle life. There are spiral staircases and battlements to explore and wonderful views of the Rother Valley from the top of the towers.

In the impressive gatehouse is the castle's original wooden portcullis, an extremely rare example of its kind.  Access to the upper level of the tower and ramparts is still available via two intact tower stairways, affording excellent views down into the castle courtyard and of the surrounding landscape.

Bodiam Castle is located near Robertsbridge in East Sussex off the A229. A great day out in Sussex for all the family.
